The ‘oo’ vowel team causes confusion for learners of English pronunciation because it is commonly pronounced as both short u and long u thoughthere isn’t a rule to indicate which pronunciation should be used.
* Words that are pronounced with a short u include: book, cook, took, foot.
* Words that are pronounced with a long u (the most common pronunciation) include: zoo, food, moon, tooth.
* The vowel team ‘oo’ can also be pronounced as
> uh, as inbutter: blood, flood
> aw, as inlaw+ r: floor, door, poor
> oh, as inno: brooch
> two different syllables, making two different sounds: cooperation, zoology.
