Math Tutoring for Homeschooled Student with Dyscalculia – Ask Sue

Hi Sue!

My daughter Maria is homeschooled/unschooled while recovering from illness. She has dyscalculia. She is in 8th grade, but her math is below grade. English is a foreign language for her, but she is fluent. She is planning to move to an American online school next year. Could you help her get to this point? She will be homeschooled, and we will choose a flexible, not very academic school, so the idea is for her to reach her full possibilities without the stress that she must be on a certain level. What is your availability and price per hour? We live in Poland, so we must account for the time difference. Please, tell me your timezone.

I need to assess how it works and whether it will work for my daughter. She is very traumatized by math and has gaps on the basic levels, and we have tried many things like mental arithmetic.

Thank you,

Agata

Hello Agata

Thank you for your inquiry.

I am quite sure we can help your daughter, but I will need to meet with her before answering our questions on the time frame.

The aim of Edublox is to overcome cognitive deficits, such as deficits in visual-spatial skills and visual memory, while simultaneously catching up on deficits in math skills and knowledge. One also needs to remove any math anxiety. Math anxiety is genuine for many individuals with dyscalculia, which may cause an inability to learn math concepts and skills or perform well on math tests.

The speed of progress differs from student to student. We finished tutoring a 13-year-old Singaporean student on Oct 22, 2024, who had dyscalculia and previously struggled with basic math. He could not count properly in ones, could add with carrying, but could not subtract with borrowing. He struggled to write numbers in the ten thousands and wrote 89,022 as 8922. We started on May 4, 2024, doing three half-hour lessons per week and, later, two half-hour lessons per week.

This student can now count and knows the times tables up to 12 and even 15. He is now good with mental math and proficient in the four basic operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, order of operations, and integers. He went from being unable to follow a regular math curriculum to doing a regular 6th-grade math curriculum after scoring 80% on a 5th-grade admission test.

This boy has gained approximately four years of math in five months of tutoring. Naturally, some students take longer. In contrast, this student gained seven years in math in three years of tutoring. She is currently doing algebra with one of our tutors.

The price is between $24-$35 per lesson, depending on the package you purchase. Development Tutor, our home-based cognitive training program, costs $36 monthly.

Time zones are primarily irrelevant as we have tutors available during most time zones.
